You can’t possibly talk about children’s illustration without mentioning dear old Beatrix (who was actually called Helen!) Potter. Beatrix Potter led the world with her tiny illustrations of animals, beautifully executed, in amazing detail, i spent my childhood wandering through Mrs Tiggy Winkles house, and rummaging through the bushes with Jemima Puddle duck – and of course worrying about what Peter Rabbit would be up to next!!

Beatrix Potter inspires me as she was so strong-minded and had such self belief (even though she had no support from her mother) and surged forward with what she believed (a woman after my own heart!).She produced her animal books, but many people are not aware of the incredible work she did studying mushrooms and fungi in general. She didnt paint for the whole of her life (as most people think) and gave up her painting when she got married (which i am not sure if i approve of, but i suppose it was the way things were in those days) and concentrated on rearing sheep and running her farm with her husband.

She was a legend………..and always will be! Thank you for bringing such joy into my childhood and enriching my imagination Beatrix – or should i say Helen??
